What is Sustainability?

The definition of “sustainability” is ‘the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level’. It is avoiding the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance. Sustainability also acknowledges the fact that civilisations use natural resources to sustain life. It takes into account how we can live in harmony with the environment around us whilst protecting it from deterioration.

We now live in a modern world and we consume heaps of natural resources daily. We consume more power than ever before, powering our cities and households. Sustainability and sustainable developments focuses on protecting the environment in which we live in.
We all identify what needs to be done to care for the environment,

  • Businesses regulating their carbon emissions and keeping them to a minimum
  • Recycling our waste
  • Reducing power consumption
  • Walking/ cycling/ taking public transport instead of the car to work

Environmental protection is one of the primary concerns of our future. We should be protecting our eco-system and focus on the elements that stress the environment. Can technology drive sustainability? Can we develop technology to protect our environment?

We don’t know what our sustainable future is but with newer technologies developing all the time and improving and introducing cleaner fuel sources we will now be looking at a greener future. We are very much aware of the pressure and strain that we have put on the environment and natural resources and can also see what the effects are on our eco-system. It is vital that we respect our environment and help sustain it.
